An 85-year-old woman in Hsinchu was throwing out her trash like any other day on Tuesday evening, when things took an unexpected turn. As she was hurling her garbage bag in the trash collection truck, the back of the truck suddenly lurched up. It hit her hard, propelling her into the air and knocking her out. The woman was left with a laceration on her head, and rushed to the hospital, where she was admitted to the intensive care unit. She has since been transferred to a regular ward.

Shocked by the incident
I was in a shock the whole day yesterday. It’s so scary. I’ll be keeping a distance when I throw out the trash from now on.

She hit the back of her head on the ground, causing a laceration about 3cm long. After our medics stopped the bleeding, bandaged her up and calmed everyone down, she was taken to the Zhudong branch of NTU Hospital for treatment.

The woman’s arm was struck by the bottom panel of the kitchen waste bin area pushing her back due to the force of the impact. The panel bounced back about 20cm. It was caused by a mechanical issue in an internal part of the structure. It’s not something you’d be able to see from outside, and it wasn’t the crew’s fault.
The general advice for disposing of garbage at garbage trucks has always been to keep a safe distance from the truck bed. However, the advice was intended to prevent people from getting splashed or injured by ruptured bags and liquid. This time around, however, the problem was the truck itself. In addition, some people argue that older people might not always be able to maintain an appropriate distance from the truck when disposing of their trash, as they may not be able to hurl their bags inside from far away.
