Keelung’s Animal Protection Office recently found illegal bird nets set up in the mountains behind Nuannuan Sports Park. Twelve birds were caught in the net, and all were believed to be dead. But when one black kite suddenly blinked, the people taking down the nets knew it was alive and called for help, saving its life.
- We’re taking down the bird nets and need you to come quickly. We found a bird of prey.
A single blink saved this bird’s life, informing its rescuers that it was alive and needed help. The young black kite was very dehydrated, but is now recovering smoothly. Keelung’s Animal Protection Office and Health Inspection Office was tipped off about illegal bird nets in the mountains behind Nuannuan Sports Park, and found 12 birds caught in the nets.
Chen Po-ting
Keelung Animal Protection Office director
There were 10 dead pigeons, a peregrine falcon, and a black kite. When we were taking down the bird net, we realized that the kite was still alive, so we immediately sent it to the hospital for birds of prey for treatment.
With the north coast spring pigeon races underway, the large bird nets were likely set up by poaching groups to intercept racing pigeons, the office said.
Kuo Ching-jung
Police officer
Cases like this often occur in remote mountainous areas, where suspects set up large bird nets in sparsely populated environments. Police will continue to patrol mountainous areas.
Setting up bird nets seriously harms the natural environment and ecosystem. Police said that those who illegally hunt birds of prey could face up to five years in prison under the Wildlife Conservation Act.
