The Fulong Sand Sculpture Art Festival is entering its 19th year. For the first time, organizers have partnered with Universal Studios to transform iconic characters from Jurassic Park, E.T., and Shrek into sand sculptures. A local hotel operator anticipates that the number of visitors will surpass previous years by 30% to 50%.
A dinosaur with jaws wide open makes it seem as though Jurassic Park is being screened directly onto the beach. Even the time machine from Back to the Futurelooks like it drove right onto the sand. This year, the Fulong Sand Sculpture Art Festival is making waves with its first-ever collaboration with Universal Studios.

I’m excited, because we get to sculpt characters we’ve never made before. They’re all characters we loved as kids from an era I really want to work with.
The artists work under the scorching sun, carving out scenes shovel by shovel. But the start of the plum rain season has proven to be a major headache.

The weather lately hasn’t been great. Since we’re entering the plum rain season, it’s really affected our detailing work.

This is the first time Universal is collaborating with a sand sculpture festival here in Taiwan, so we expect our annual visitor numbers to exceed the average. We’re projecting growth of 30 to 50%.
This year’s “Universal Beach Party” is to open on May 29th at Fulong Beach. About 15 domestic and international artists are creating at least 40 large sand sculptures for the festival. Thanks to the star power, organizers are confident that this year’s turnout will blow previous records out of the water.
