Taiwan shares opened high and closed even higher on Friday, led by finance and shipping stocks. The Taiex closed up 148 points at 20,708 on turnover of NT$535.2 billion. It marks the third day in a row that the 5-day moving average has risen.

Shares of bellwether stock TSMC picked up NT$6 to close above NT$800. After the trading day, the company reported April revenue of NT$236 billion, a new high for the month, and the second highest monthly figure ever reported. The board of directors approved a higher cash dividend of NT$4 per share for the first quarter of the year. Meanwhile, shipping giant Wan Hai Lines reported a profit for the first quarter, bouncing back from big losses in Q1 last year. Earnings per share stood at NT$1.65, higher than market expectations. On Friday, its shares closed limit-up after hitting NT$63. Yang Ming Marine Transport also closed limit-up, while Evergreen Marine shares gained 9%.
