Taiwan surfaced as a point of discussion during a hearing at the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday, even though the primary focus of the session was the United States’ detention of former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro. During the hearing, US Senator Pete Ricketts questioned Secretary of State Marco Rubio about whether the high-profile operation could have broader geopolitical implications. More specifically, Ricketts asked if it might influence cross-strait relations or affect China’s ambitions toward Taiwan. Let’s hear more.

Pete Ricketts
US Senator
Do you believe that the operation to take Maduro to custody will have any impact on communist China’s actions or intentions toward Taiwan?

Marco Rubio
US Secretary of State
No, look. The situation of Taiwan is a Xi legacy project that he’s made very clear that that’s what he intends to do and that’s going to be irrespective of anything that happens in the world. Your point, though, is well taken in that is, the US, in conducting this operation, I think, was certainly startling to China, to Russia, to Iran…

Rubio said he believed that the US’ detention of Maduro would not influence China’s position on Taiwan. He added that the detention did however indeed startle some of the US’ key adversaries, including China, as the operation was something that only the US could do. Rubio also responded to questions regarding recent investigations into senior PLA leaders Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli. The US secretary of state said that purges of military leadership have been a clear pattern in China over the past several years. He said it was an internal systemic issue, and China would not share or discuss them in depth with the US, which is closely monitoring the situation.
