A squad leader of Keelung’s fire department tragically lost his life on a mission Wednesday night. On Friday, a memorial was held for 41-year-old Chan Neng-chieh, attended by family, officials, and Chan’s colleagues. The Keelung City Government is applying for him to be honored at the Martyrs’ Shrine, while the Minister of the Interior paid respects and condemned fraudulent campaigns made in his family’s name. Let’s hear more.
Liu Shyh-fang
Minister of the Interior
On behalf of the Ministry of the Interior and the premier, I’d like to pay my deepest respects to the squad leader, Mr. Chan. His passing was really difficult for the firefighters. I’d also like to offer my condolences to his family. There were criticisms of his family on social media or fundraising campaigns made in his family’s name that later proved to be fraudulent. I stand by the family of Mr. Chan in condemning these actions. .
Chiu Pei-ling
Keelung deputy mayor
Yesterday, the mayor said he’d apply for Mr. Chan to be recognized at the Martyrs’ Shrine. Many people also want to make donations for him. The city government will provide its greatest assistance in line with his parents’ wishes. We are proud of him, and offer our condolences to his family.
Ting Li-na
Borough chief of Xinfeng, Zhongzheng Dist.
He’s really low-key. The whole neighborhood knows him as a kindly and friendly kid, so we all like him very much. The news was really heartbreaking. He was such a great talent. He was probably really exhausted. I’m heartbroken. It’s like I’ve lost my own kid.
At the time of the incident, Chan had entered the site three times and offered his gas mask to a woman trapped in the fire, only to lose his own life. The mayor of Keelung pledged to have him honored at the Martyrs’ Shrine and seek the maximum amount possible in bereavement compensation. The city’s fire department also made a social media post to honor their squad leader.
