An Australian man who had been missing for days after a quarrel with his Taiwanese wife was found on Tuesday playing the saxophone in a cave in the mountains of Taitung. The story started the week before, when the 50-year-old man left his home carrying his sax after a domestic dispute. He was reported missing and was only located days later thanks to a search-and-rescue operation with drones. But rescuers were unable to reach him immediately due to the difficult terrain, so they brought him supplies while planning a rescue operation to get him out of the cave by abseiling. He’s expected to be brought down from the mountain on Friday. Let’s hear more.
Mr. Chang
Fire department volunteer
The path is very rough. It’s all steep as a cliff, with lots of thorns. It’s unbelievable.
Lai Yuan-chih
Fire fighter
He’s quite weak now, and he didn’t bring any equipment. His shoes have burst, so it’s hard for him to walk. He’s got some injuries on his feet too. We provided him with some basic first aid, and gave him food and water.
Kao Yung-hsu
Friend of Australian man
He clearly brought his saxophone along because he wanted to vent. It’s quite surprising. He must’ve gotten lost, and the more he walked the deeper he got.
The man’s scooter was found near a trail he often hikes, which clued rescuers as to his potential location. They used a drone to look for him, and when he was found, he played the saxophone to the device. Fortunately, he was fully conscious and could still move, and after several days, rescuers finally reached him. A friend of his says that he enjoys extreme sports, and that he should’ve had no problem getting down the mountain. For his wife, it’s a relief that he’s alive and well.
