And a Taiwanese university has faced a setback in its international expansion. National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University recently sought to register its initials NYCU as a trademark in the US. But New York University filed an opposition, arguing that NYCU was too similar to its own NYU and could cause confusion. The US Trademark Trial and Appeal Board finally reached a verdict on the matter. It ruled that NYCU could not be registered by the university, as American consumers would have difficulty distinguishing between the two.

NYCU expressed surprise at the ruling, but said it respects the committee’s decision. It is now regrouping and moving forward with a new strategy, adding the word “Taiwan” under NYCU. The university plans to reapply this summer. NYCU is a pioneer in Taiwan for registering a trademark in the US, as other institutions of its caliber such as National Taiwan University and National Tsing Hua University have not attempted to do so.
