In Yunlin County, a Tesla crashed off a freeway late Thursday, leaving one dead and two with minor injuries. The car crashed into a guardrail along Freeway No. 1 in Huwei, careening 6.5 meters down an embankment and bursting into flames. The driver and one passenger escaped relatively unscathed. But a second passenger was ejected from the vehicle and died from severe injuries.
The fire was worsened by the car’s 7,000 lithium batteries, which kept reigniting after being put out. In a stroke of ingenuity, firefighters turned flood boards into a makeshift water tank. They dunked the car inside to cool the batteries, successfully putting out the blaze.
