Alex Shorey traveled to Taiwan to testify at the Taipei District Court on Wednesday for a case dating back to 2023. Mr. Shorey says his girlfriend at the time, Ms. Yang, had laced grape juice with rat poison to keep him in Taiwan, after she found out he was planning on returning to his home country earlier than he had planned to. What’s more, Mr. Shorey says Ms. Yang was jealous of his former employer, as he was having sexual relations with her while being in an open relationship with Ms. Yang. Prosecutors are seeking an 8-year sentence for Ms. Yang for attempted murder.Further complicating the case is the issue of Ms. Yang’s ex-husband, a British national who mysteriously died less than a month before she started seeing Mr. Shorey. The British man’s brother was present at the trial on Wednesday, saying that the circumstances of his brother’s death and Mr. Shorey’s alleged poisoning were very similar. The ex-brother-in-law had come to Taiwan after losing touch with his brother, only to find he had died and his body had long been cremated, leaving a forensic test out of the question. Though Ms. Yang was also taken to court over the matter, the case was ultimately dismissed due to a lack of evidence.
