The truck had been transporting silica sand to Taichung port, when it suddenly broke down. It emitted a plume of white smoke that lingered and greatly reduced visibility on the road, while raising concerns of an explosion. Locals fled the scene as quickly as possible and called the police to the area.Voice of localWitnessed the sceneThe wind was blowing from the south, so the smoke didn’t drift over here. It happened at the entrance to that garage.Ku Chia-jungPolice officerFortunately, the malfunction didn’t affect any passersby. The driver tested negative for alcohol, and the cause of the incident is under investigation.It is thought that the truck’s turbocharger malfunctioned due to an oil leak. Once it came into contact with high temperatures, the oil vaporized and burned, producing a thick smoke that was let out via the exhaust pipe. Police and firefighters arrived at the scene to direct traffic while the truck blocked the road. It was repaired two hours after the breakdown and traffic returned to normal.
