Thousands of people will be homewardbound this Friday to spend the Lunar New Year holiday with their families. And many of them plan on taking the high speed rail. But if you haven’t already booked a reserved ticket, you’ll have to squeeze into a carriage that has open seating. Fortunately, for this holiday season, the HSR has launched a waiting time indicator system for non-reserved seats. The system allows passengers to spend less time in line waiting and avoid peak periods.

It’s almost Lunar New Year, and time to grab train tickets home, but it can be really frustrating to miss out on reserved seats. To prevent long waits on the train platform, the HSR has launched a non-reserved seating light indicator, so you don’t have to worry about when to head out.

It’s handy because you can check it at home to decide what time to head out.

I noticed the feature was available on the official app yesterday. It’s great if you can’t book a reserved seat.

We’re expecting crowds in both directions on the second, third and fourth days of the Lunar New Year.

The wait-time indicator is also available on the messaging app Line. If you have Line on your phone, you can access the indicator by going to "Line Today," then "Lifestyle," and scroll down for the latest information. The system gives an estimated waiting time for non-reserved ticket holders from when they arrive at the station to the time they board. Each icon of a person represents 20 minutes. If they appear red, it indicates waiting times of more than one hour, giving travellers the chance to avoid those time periods.
