Premier Cho Jung-tai on Tuesday confirmed that Taiwan’s Deputy Trade Representative Yen Huai-shing had passed away earlier this month. Yen was a key figure in Taiwan-US negotiations, but was hospitalized earlier this year due to health issues. She died on March 12 aged 53. Her passing was only confirmed by her family on Monday, as her death was not publicly announced until after her memorial service.

Yen was the daughter of Yen Ching-chang, who previously served as Minister of Finance and Taiwan’s first representative to the WTO. Yen herself held a doctorate in law from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After returning to Taiwan, she taught at National Taipei University and later joined the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research. In 2024, she was recruited by the Executive Yuan’s Office of Trade Negotiations and served as deputy chief negotiator in the recent Taiwan-US trade talks.
