Recently in Taoyuan’s Longtan district, a driver was backing his vehicle down a slope when he accidentally hit the gas instead of the brakes, sending the car surging backward. It crashed through the guardrail, plunging into a pond below. The 41-year-old driver was able to swim to safety, but had to leave his car in the pond. Eventually, a tow truck came to hoist it back to shore.

A white SUV slowly sinks into a pond with its trunk wide open, only the roof and tailgate still visible above the water. Observers took out their phones to record the scene and call the police, worried that people might be trapped inside.

A crane eventually came to pull it out of the water as the owner stood by, heartbroken to see his beloved car in such a state. But how did it end up there in the first place?

- The slope here is very steep. Has this ever happened before?

It’s a first. Especially to see a car falling in, it’s a first. Sometimes people hit the walls or planters, but it’s the first time a car has rammed the guardrail like this.

The incident occurred on Dabeikeng Street in Taoyuan’s Longtan. The 41-year-old driver surnamed Peng was backing down the slope when the car suddenly surged forward, taking a sharp turn to smash through the barrier and down into the pond below. Fortunately, the windows were open, allowing him to climb out and swim to safety.

Cheng Ching-ssu
Longtan traffic police captain
The driver was the only occupant. He has already escaped before police arrived. No injuries were reported, and a breathalyzer test showed no alcohol in his system.

While the driver was left rattled and onlookers shocked, thankfully, the only victim of this incident turned out to be the car itself.
