Monday marks the one-year anniversary of the death of renowned actress Barbie Hsu, known in Taiwan as Big S. The Taiwanese star shot to fame in Asia thanks to her role in the series “Meteor Garden.” She passed away last Feb. 2 from the flu, at the age of 48, shocking fans all around the world. On Monday, she was commemorated with a memorial statue in her honor at the Chin Pao San cemetery.

The moment that the statue was revealed, Hsu’s mother went forward to give it an emotional teary hug. She held on to the effigy for a while, collapsing against it and crying in grief. She was comforted by her son-in-law, who fought back his sorrow during the moment. Meanwhile, Big S’s younger sister, Dee Hsu, known as Little S, reached forward to touch the statue as well. The artwork is filled with symbols of deep love, and was designed by Barbie’s widower Koo Jun-yup from South Korea. The path leading from the entrance to the statue is made up of nine white concrete steps which wind uphill in an S-shaped curve. In Korean, the number nine is homophonous with his surname, while the curvy path honors the letter S that came to be her name.
