A public memorial was held on Monday for Chan Neng-chieh, a firefighting hero who lost his life during a rescue mission on Jan. 21. The Keelung firefighter took off his oxygen mask and gave it to a civilian during the mission, a move that ultimately cost him his life in the line of duty. The ceremony was filled with emotional moments, including a playful scolding from a friend of Chan’s who was born on the same year, month and day as him. The friend told him off one last time in his eulogy, saying he had left him behind to save others. Let’s hear more.

This will be the first and the last time I’ll ever scold you. You brat. You left us behind to save others. Do you have any idea how much we’ll miss you? You left behind the spirit of sacrificing ourselves to save lives, and you are a hero. Everyone is calling you the pride of the firefighters. But look. So many brothers who stand with you, family members who love you, and friends who care deeply about you. I’ve shed so many tears for you.

When tragedy strikes, it fills us all with grief. Many of us still tear up when he comes to mind.

The investigation report needs more details added, and we will work together with prosecutors on the matter. On the front of compensation and survivor benefits, they are in progress and will be finalized soon. We hope to visit his family after the ceremony, and we hope they can get through the Lunar New Year in peace.

Before the service, the hearse procession arrived at the Ren’ai Firefigthing Unit, where Chan had served. His colleagues, standing in formation, were unable to hold back their tears to bid the hero farewell. Chan’s equipment from his firefighting days remains at the station, including his smoke-stained helmet. Though he is no longer there, his spirit of self-sacrifice in saving lives has been awarded a posthumous presidential commendation. The Keelung City Government also posthumously promoted Chan to unit captain and has made arrangements for him to be enshrined at the Martyr’s Shrine in the city.
