The world-renowned Penghu International Fireworks Festival kicked off with a disappointing start on Thursday night. Some 700 drones took to the night sky for a sparkling color spectacle inspired by the Dragon Ball franchise. Or that’s what they would’ve done had it not been for a big tech failure. Festival-goers were deeply let down, when the drones failed to actually fly in the formations they were supposed to, leaving unrecognizable clusters of lights in the air, and faces of confusion on the ground. Let’s hear more.

The fireworks were super beautiful, but the drone show was a flop. It was quite a let-down.

I’m a fan of Dragon Ball. But the ending was embarrasing, you could only see half of their faces.

It was lovely at the beginning… but at the end half of the drone’s weren’t working.

Lin Jie-shin
Penghu County Deputy Commissioner
We’re investigating whether there was any external interference, and reviewing safety management and testing procedures for future sessions.

The drones took flight in formation, but many had trouble figuring out what it was supposed to be. The show was quickly brought to a halt. It started again soon after, but by then all the magic was gone. The Penghu County Government has apologized to visitors. It says it is investigating whether the signal was intentionally disrupted to ruin the show and cause drones to crash and get damaged. The case has been handed over to the Civil Aeronautics Administration.
