Dozens of people jumped into the sea at Yehliu on Tuesday, as part of a local folk tradition with more than 100 years of history. Overcast skies and rainy weather did not deter the participants of this year’s Yehliu Harbor Purification Festival, which leapt into the water with glee to ask the gods for big fish hauls and protection. Among the jumpers were locals and visitors from other parts of Taiwan, other countries in the world and even other galaxies.
With a splash, the shouting men jump into the sea, sedan chair included.
This is the Annual Yehliu Harbor Purification Festival, which takes place on the Lantern Festival. The century-long tradition is a ceremony to ask the gods for peace, safety and big hauls of fish. One of the highlights involves participants, aged 3 to 76 this year, jumping into the harbor. Many dressed up for the occasion.

It’s the fifth year I’m taking part, to ask for peace and good fortune in the Year of the Horse. I’m from Hong Kong but I’ve lived in Taiwan for 30 years.
One of the most striking jumpers dressed up like a Na’avi from Avatar. Locals love the festival, and so do visitors from abroad.

I’m visiting and it so happened that this event was happening. I thought it was really interesting, because it’s similar to a festival back home. It sounded really fun.
The rain did not put a damper on anyone’s enthusiasm as they asked the gods for plentiful fish in the year to come. For those watching, it’s a spectacle that celebrates and keeps Taiwan’s folk traditions alive.
