A large blaze at recycling yard near a train station put passengers on edge in Taichung on Tuesday morning. The flames came up at around 11, at a contracted recycling station beside Xinwuri Station, dangerously close to the high speed rail and the Taichung Metro.

The Taiwan Railway quickly cut the power along the tracks to help firefighters put out the inferno. Fortunately, the fire was extinguished in just 20 minutes. Services on the Taichung Metro and the high speed rail were not affected, but on the Taiwan Railway, trains ran on a single track in both directions for almost one hour. It is thought that the fire was caused by the spontaneous combustion of discarded cardboard boxes. No injuries were reported, and the flames didn’t spread beyond the recycling yard. The exact source of the flames is still under investigation.
