The Taiwan Independence movement has been frowned upon by China for many years, before Taiwan’s Criminal Code Article 100 was amended in 1992, all Taiwan Independence advocacy was branded as treason, and offenders arrested, for that reason, much Taiwan Independence activism was fomented by Taiwanese students living abroad. Some formed “World United Formosans for Independence.”

For a long time, its members were seen as terrorists, and blacklisted by the Taiwanese state, many lived in exile for decades, but after 50 years of activism, the organization has taken root all over the world, and now it is also influential in Taiwan’s political parties.

On today’s episode of Taiwan History, we examine World United Formosans for Independence, since its beginnings in the 1950s.
