President Lai Ching-te received a bipartisan delegation from the US Congress on Monday morning. The group was led by US Senate Foreign Relations Committee Ranking Democrat Jeanne Shaheen, along with Republican Senator John Curtis. Though their Taiwan visit is short, sources say the delegation will urge Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan to pass the special defense budget as soon as possible.
Lai Ching-te
President
We thank both the executive and legislative branches of the United States, across party lines, for continuing to implement arms sales to Taiwan in accordance with the Taiwan Relations Act and the Six Assurances. Taking the procurement of the HIMARS rocket system from the US as an example, the letter of offer was originally set to expire at the end of this month. We thank the US government for its assistance and willingness to grant a slight extension, allowing Taiwan to continue acquiring this weapon.
Jeanne Shaheen
US Senator (Democratic Party)
We’re here to underscore the strong and enduring commitment to Taiwan in the United States Congress. That commitment is grounded in the Taiwan Relations Act and decades of support for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. Maintaining that stability is a shared effort.
John Curtis
US Senator (Republican Party)
You know, a long time ago I lived in Taiwan. Back then my Mandarin was pretty good. It’s a shame because I’ve forgotten most of it. Now it’s more like… “horse horse tiger tiger (just passable).”
Senator Curtis is an expert in strategic policy toward China and previously lived in Taiwan for three years. During the reception at the Presidential Office, he opened his remarks by showing off some Mandarin. Meanwhile, Democratic Ranking Member Shaheen is the first woman in US history to be elected both as a governor and later as a US senator. She is currently a key leader on major foreign policy issues. Also part of the delegation were Senator Thom Tillis, who co-chairs the Senate Taiwan Caucus and Senator Jacky Rosen.
