President Lai Ching-te on Friday received the President of Paraguay Santiago Peña at the Presidential Office. The dignitary was welcomed with full military honors and a 21-gun salute. During their meeting inside, Lai presented Peña with the Order of Brilliant Jade with Grand Cordon in recognition of his efforts to strengthen Taiwan-Paraguay relations and for repeatedly voicing support for Taiwan at international events. The two leaders also witnessed the signing of four memorandums of understanding, including cooperation on AI computing capacity and Taiwan’s import of Paraguayan poultry products. Let’s hear more.

Since taking office, President Peña has continued to support the various cooperation projects between our two countries and has spoken up for Taiwan on many important international occasions. Taiwan, which cherishes freedom and peace, will continue to stand together with Paraguay and with every partner that supports Taiwan in a steady and responsible manner.

President of Paraguay
Paraguay will continue to be Taiwan’s strongest ally, standing side by side in international forums and firmly defending Taiwan’s right to actively participate in the democratic international system. This is Paraguay’s unwavering commitment.

Before visiting Taiwan, Peña made a stopover in Los Angeles, where he met the newly elected president of Honduras, a country that was a diplomatic ally of Taiwan until 2023. During the meeting, Peña reportedly spoke about Paraguay’s experience cooperating with Taiwan, which piqued the interest of the Honduran leader. Media outlets have reported that the new Honduran government is reassessing whether its switching of allegiance to Beijing was actually in the country’s interests. And now that the pro-China party has been defeated, it could present an opportunity for Taiwan and Honduras to restore bilateral ties.
