A 91-year-old Taiwanese author is now the proud owner of a piece of land in space. The National Central University held an international press conference on Wednesday to present nativist writer Huang Chun-ming with a unique honor: an asteroid named after him. The asteroid in question used to be called No. 777018 and was renamed to recognize Huang’s contributions to literature. At the event, Huang thanked his grandfather, who raised him, and pledged to continue writing in the future. Let’s hear from him.

They called my wife. How can something like this happen? I don’t know. I never expected anything like this. I’m overjoyed, I’m so happy I don’t know what to say. My family has given me a lot of strength, especially my grandfather. I’d like to take some time to say some words to him. Grandpa, I haven’t gone astray. I’ll continue to work hard, and keep writing. We’ve named asteroids after people who have contributed to Taiwan. We’ve named more than 80 so far, almost 100. It’s a big range.

The Huang Chun-ming Asteroid was discovered back in 2008 at National Central University’s Lulin Observatory. It has a diameter of 1.69km and takes more than five and a half years to complete one orbit of the Sun. It’s also the fourth asteroid named after a figure in Taiwanese arts and literature. The previous three were the Chung Li-ho Asteroid in 2012, the Loa Ho Asteroid in 2024 and the Chen Cheng-po Asteroid last year.
