A fire broke out on Friday afternoon at the CPC’s Kaohisung Dalin Refinery. The flames erupted at around 2 p.m., sending a plume of thick black smoke into the sky that could be spotted from kilometers away. Fortunately, no staff were trapped in the plant.

The Environmental Protection Bureau is investigating the cause of the fire with an artificial intelligence cloud monitoring system. The preliminary hypothesis is that the a heat exchanger may have leaked and triggered the fire by igniting oil that was stored in a tank. Strong winds carried pollutants from the fire northward, causing the air quality to plummet in eight districts including Cianjhen, Siaogangand Fongshan. Im accprdamce with the Air Pollution Control act, the Environmental Protection Bureau could impose a fine of up to NT$5 million.
