How does a cockroach sound as a prize in a scratch lottery? Well, apparently to the Taipei Zoo, that sounds like a fantastic surprise. But not so much to some visitors who visited the zoo this past Lunar New Year break. The zoo was offering raffle tickets for spending money on the premises, with a bonus scratch card that left more than one winner spooked, after realizing the prize was a real cockroach specimen. Amid mixed reactions, the zoo explained, that there were other bugs to be had as well. Let’s hear more.

I quite like the bug specimens. I wanted them before, because I like collecting. Having a cockroach one gets people talking more.

Besides the commemorative value, it also is an educational memento, as they contain real bugs. I’d like to remind people who took part in the Year of the Horse scratch-off to keep their tickets, as we will be holding the second stage of the draw on Wednesday, Feb. 25.
Though cockroaches can be found for free on the streets of any city, this specimen is actually worth NT$499. Other bugs on offer include crickets, plant-hoppers and spiders. And the Taipei Zoo says that if you want more than the bug themed souvenirs, there are more and bigger prizes to be had in the second phase of the event. There’s giraffe plushies, and even iPhones, so if you have a raffle ticket, don’t throw it away just yet. Who knows? Your roach companion could win you a cool new phone.
