And as soon as he arrived back in Taiwan, President Lai Ching-te continued on his diplomatic engagements. In the afternoon, Lai received a cross-party delegation of lawmakers from Israel at the Presidential Office. And in the near future, he’ll be receiving a delegation from Paraguay. Led by President Santiago Peña, the group from Paraguay is set to visit Taiwan from May 7 to 10. But reports have emerged that China is trying to pressure Paraguay to switch allegiance with financial incentives, which would make Taiwan lose its only ally in South America. In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized Beijing, saying that its promises were always empty. Let’s hear more.
Hsiao Kuang-wei
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson
China has long tried to lure Taiwan’s allies with unrealistic promises and empty slogans. The ministry sincerely welcomes President Santiago Peña of the Republic of Paraguay for a state visit, which is the strongest proof of the close relationship between our two countries.
Chen Fang-yu
Soochow University Associate Professor
If you look at the contrast between us and China, China simply throws money around to later take everything away. Meanwhile, we work with our partner countries to earn money together and maintain long-term relationships.
Peña’s visit will be his second to Taiwan since taking office. His previous was in May 2024, when he led a delegation to attend President Lai Ching-te’s inauguration ceremony. To honor Peña, Lai will welcome the Paraguayan president with full military honors, and present him with an Order of Brilliant Jade to recognize his outstanding contributions to bilateral ties.
