From May 6 to 8, Taiwan’s National Chi Nan University is hosting the 6th annual conference of the Hanseatic League of Universities, or HLU, as well as the ceremony for the World Universities Ranking for Innovation, or WURI. More than 250 university leaders from 13 countries are attending. This year, the university has moved up 30 places on the WURI to rank 69th globally.

Beautiful singing reverberates through the venue and gives the event a Taiwanese cultural flair. This is the 2026 HLU Annual Conference and WURI Global Rankings Ceremony at National Chi Nan University, or NCNU. More than 240 university presidents and vice presidents of 13 countries are gathered here, in Nantou’s Puli Township. The host, NCNU leaped 30 places up in the WURI rankings to 69th place in 2026.

All of our parking lots are covered in solar PV panels, which allows us to truly implement renewable energy and carbon emissions reduction in university campus governance. We’re implementing these principles locally, not just in the university, but expanding the practice to our vicinity.

NCNU is also among the Top 50 globally in eight innovation targets under the WURI rankings. The university is also actively deploying innovative and AI solutions.

This international conference for higher education brings university leaders to the mountains of Central Taiwan, and demonstrates Taiwanese universities’ commitment to innovation, sustainability and community engagement, which translates into local investments and global influence.
