Taiwanese author Yang Shuang-zi on Monday was presented a medal by Premier Cho Jung-tai, for her contributions to Taiwan’s culture. Last month, an English-language translation of her novel “Taiwan Travelogue” was awarded the prestigious US National Book Award for Translated Literature. Yang is the first Taiwanese to win the honor. Let’s hear from the author and her translator.

I feel so lucky to see “Taiwan Travelogue” receive so much attention, seeing the word Taiwan all over the press in mainstream media outlets in the US and the UK. I am very thankful, it’s great.
“Taiwan Travelogue” is set in the Japanese colonial period and tells the story of a young novelist who travels Taiwan by rail and learning about the local food and history. In her acceptance speech, Yang stated that Taiwan belonged to the people of Taiwan, a message that Japan heard 100 years ago, and China should hear 100 years later.
