In today's society, we take tourism for granted. The growing popularity of tourism has led to the growth of many other industries worldwide. The concept of "tourism" first appeared in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial era.
It became a cultural phenomenon when the first railway opened on Taiwan's west coast in 1908. Around this time it also became the norm to take Sundays off work. The Government-General of Taiwan's Railways Bureau opened a Tourism Department in 1937, to promote the tourism industry.
A great deal of footage has been saved from the colonial era. For today's show, we've collected a set of archival footage to bring that lost era back to life for viewers.
