Many would say that the most influential politician in Taiwan’s modern history is former President Lee Teng-hui.

He was the first elected president of the R.O.C. as well as the first president born in Taiwan, he lived through Japanese occupation and the 228 Incident, through to the birth of Taiwan democracy, which he advanced over 12 years of office. His life story reads as a primer of modern Taiwan, but what special qualities, skills or background made him who he was?
