Since the deadly earthquake on April 3, Hualien’s tourism sector has been struggling. An association of hotels in the county says that the average occupancy for June stands at a dismal 8%.

In a bid to help hoteliers, the Tourism Administration is planning to soon launch a subsidy scheme for hotel stays. Starting June, overnight stays from Monday to Thursday can get a subsidy of NT$1,000 per night, and NT$500 per night from Friday to Sunday. Nearby Taitung is also trying to help out. Taitung City Mayor Chen Ming-feng says his government is organizing 10 group tours to get locals traveling to Hualien and help its tourism industry.
