A mother on a trip to Tokyo was left fuming after crossing the street at one of the most iconic landmarks in the Japanese capital. The woman had taken her daughter to the famous Shibuya Scramble Crossing. While was taking a video of the young child posing among the crowd there, a woman rushed past the child and shoved the child out of the way, making for a video that has gone viral online. Many in Taiwan have been shocked by the aggressive bump, especially due to stereotypes surrounding Japanese politeness. But a local in Japan says it’s not all that surprising. Let’s hear more.

I would have stopped and grabbed her. There’s no reason for her to do that, and she even targeted a kid!

If it were my child, I would be really upset. I’d probably call her out. Perhaps it’s part of their culture, but I’d be very upset.

I would get mad when people bumped into me, but my Japanese friend grabbed me and told me to not get mad, you just have to respect local customs. Still, there are some instances where you should just grab your phone and call the police, like if you get hurt or if your belongings get damaged.

The video of the girl in Shibuya has attracted much attention online in Taiwan and Japan. Some find the woman’s actions completely unacceptable and disgusting. But others say that getting bumped into at a zebra crossing is quite normal, especially if you’ve stopped in the middle. The mother says that she assumed the green light would last a long time, so she didn’t see the harm in stopping for a bit to remember the moment. But she acknowledged that perhaps it was inappropriate for them to stop.
