Arthur Wang, Cross-Strait Policy Association secretary-general: The difference between her and past leaders is that, past leaders may have acquiesced to China. They may have trafficked in the idea that our economy depends on China. Or there’s the other possibility – they may have been extremely confrontational with Beijing. You’ll find that Tsai Ing-wen is not like that. What she’s seeking is – she is not looking to provoke or clash with China, but she is saying, “I insist on my position and attitude.” Most important of all, she’s devising ways to build up our strength and capacities.

The piece also comments on Tsai’s diplomacy, saying that her approach to Beijing is like that of a cat against a wolf. In the face of Chinese belligerence, it says, Tsai uses soft power creatively to promote Taiwan as peace-loving and compassionate.
