Vice President-elect Hsiao Bi-khim gave the closing speech at a Taipei forum of the Center for Asia-Pacific Resilience and Innovation. In her address, she referenced the slogan “Taiwan can help,” but made the case that Taiwan can also lead. Let’s hear from her.

Hsiao Bi-khim
Vice president-elect
Not only can Taiwan help, but Taiwan can lead. Why do I believe that Taiwan can play a leadership role? First of all, Taiwan is an island of resilience, a society that has overcome hardship. At this moment, Taiwan is bombarded with cyber attacks, disinformation, and political interference, in addition to near-daily military incursions into our vicinity, all aimed at coercing and crippling the public will to safeguard our free and democratic way of life. The Taiwan template is built on a foundation of resilience forged in the crucible of adversity and shaped by our precarious existence in the shadow of a giant neighbor. Looking ahead, President Lai and I are committed to leveraging these assets as we work to forge stronger partnership with likeminded societies around the world.

The VP-elect said that, through their own efforts, the Taiwanese people had built a resilient nation. She said Taiwan deserves international support, and that Taiwan’s success was of vital importance to the world.
