Friday was the second day of Chinese military exercises around Taiwan. On Day 1 on Thursday, several Chinese coast guard vessels were spotted sailing in restricted waters near Taiwan’s outlying islands of Dongyin and Wuqiu. The same events unfolded on Friday morning. The Taiwan Coast Guard employed the same approach, warning the intruders and demanding that they leave while documenting the entire incident.

Voice of officer
Coast Guard Administration
You have entered restricted waters near Wuqiu, in a severe affront to regional peace and stability that affects maritime safety and order. Change course immediately and sail away.

Officer
Coast Guard Administration
Change direction and leave our restricted waters at once, or we will be forced to take action.

The Chinese vessels continued with their incursion, coming as close as 300 meters from the Taiwan Coast Guard vessels. The standoff lasted for an hour until the intruders left. With cross-strait tensions on the rise, the Coast Guard Administration says it will continue to monitor any movements of China’s coast guard vessels. Navigation notices and updates will be issued to ensure that Taiwan’s waters remain safe.
