CEO of Nvidia Jensen Huang, whose net worth is approaching NT$3 trillion, threw the ceremonial first pitch at a Major League Baseball game that also featured Taiwan Day in San Francisco over the weekend. Also performing at the event were Taiwanese rapper Dwagie and TSG Hawks’ cheerleading squad. Some of the nearly 4,000 overseas Taiwanese who turned up said they went because they wanted to see the Taiwanese tech legend.

Right on cue, Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, threw the first pitch for the Oakland A’s on Taiwan Day in Oakland Coliseum.

Standing on the pitcher’s mound, Huang certainly looked the part in an A’s jersey with the number 93. This is because 1993 was the year that Huang, a Taiwanese American founded his company.

Excitement was in the air as nearly 4,000 Taiwanese turned up for not only the baseball game, but also for Huang and Taiwanese Heritage Day.

I went because I learned that Nvidia’s CEO was going to be there, so I thought I’d go and see. He later went into the crowd where people were taking pictures and was surrounded by lots of people. The area that he went to happened to be reserved for Taiwan Day, and we bought tickets to seats in that area, so all the people surrounding him were Taiwanese, and people mobbed him. You could hear many people speaking Taiwanese.

Huang once again showed everyone the people person that he was as he busily signed autographs. Bags of gifts were handed out for people seated in the stadium section reserved for those attending Taiwan Day. The bags had a Formosan black bear printed on them and contained a bottle of Taipei’s famous Fuhang Soy Milk among other memorabilia. Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim also delivered a prerecorded message, highlighting the deep ties between California and Taiwan.

And wow, what a way to highlight the Taiwanese-American community in California. Thank you for supporting Taiwan Day.

It was a meeting of two legends as Taiwanese rap star Dwagie, who performed in Taiwanese, had his picture taken with Huang. Also hailing from Taiwan were ukulele artist Feng E and the TSG Hawks baseball team’s cheerleading squad. Organizers said that Jensen Huang agreed to come to the event as soon as he received the invite to throw the first pitch. He probably didn’t expect that his appearance would unite the hearts of Taiwanese living in northern California.
